Just Reston

Ah, the best laid plans. Today my parents and I intended to get up and drive to Mount Vernon, enjoying a beautiful day exploring there. Instead, life (and Virginia traffic!) intervened, and we ended up running errands (three in the front seat, like old childhood days) and just enjoying each others' company. My mom and dad were able to sleep in, then we spent a leisurely morning while everybody ate/showered at a relaxed pace. We didn't hit the road until 11 or so, and then--

We stopped into an Ethan Allen store so my dad could check out his East Coast counterparts...
We stopped at Bed Bath and Beyond to get some corn on the cob holders (unfortunately, they were out of these and these--Iowa, and Wisconsin, baby!--so for now, we had to settle for a set of these)...
We lunched at Panera Bread...
and we managed to pick up one of the few pairs of these in this color left anywhere this time of year (for my mom--Matt and I already have a pair each, and are huge fans).

By that time, it was three o'clock, meaning we wouldn't have gotten to Mount Vernon until after four, giving us little time to look around and placing us squarely in the teeth of DC-area rush-hour traffic on the way back. And leaving poor Matt by his lonesome in the meantime.

No thanks. Instead, we headed home for a couple hours of reading and a nap. Matt will be home shortly, and we're going to grill hamburgers and eat corn on the cob. We're also planning to drive into DC for a bit of a sightseeing tour. And honestly, even more than I would have enjoyed the attractions, I enjoyed having a relaxing day with my parents, the kind that's hard to come by when you live so far apart and it seems like visits are always so jam-packed they leave you exhausted. I couldn't have asked for any more.
